Ocean Pollution Project
Artist Statement
In this project I took a fashion photography spin on the problem of ocean pollution. I planned on using blue, pink, and teal gels to create an underwater feeling. I also planned to take close-up portraits of women, to represent mermaids and sirens, with various kinds of the most common plastic and trash that can be found in the ocean wrapped around them in different ways. The types of pollution I decided on were plastic bags, plastic straws, bottle caps, and can tabs. I also wanted to use rope and netting as trash on the models to represent overfishing and negative man-made effects on the ecosystem. My main idea was to represent putting human models into the detrimental situations that sea animals and creatures find themselves in on a daily basis. To put ourselves into their hypothetical shoes, because if ocean pollution continues to get worse and not better, it will affect us and it will be us.
